A dozen ideas for your donors on Valentine's Day

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, a time when we focus on sharing love and gratitude, here are 12 meaningful ways to thank your donors and show how much their support means:

1. A handwritten note

Blank pages can feel daunting, but writing a heartfelt thank-you card doesn’t have to be complicated. The formula is simple: “Thank you for [specific action]. It meant [impact] to me/us.” A personal touch like this can leave a lasting impression.

2. A quick text message

One nonprofit I support sends almost weekly texts that contain a formula of, “You are awesome, we appreciate you, and here’s something cool you helped accomplish.” These brief, encouraging updates show gratitude while keeping donors connected to the tangible outcomes.

3. A small gift

Surprise and delight your supporters with a token of appreciation, like a vinyl sticker, a keychain, or another small item that reflects your organization’s mission.

4. A brief email

Like a text or card, an email can be short and sweet. A simple “Thank you for your gift” followed by a sentence or two about the impact goes a long way.

5. Program art

Share something meaningful created within your programs. Whether it’s a drawing from a child you serve, a poem written by a volunteer, or a photo of the impact, these moments can connect donors to the heart of your work.

6. Program gifts

One year, we sent donors bookmarks crafted by a microloans group they had supported. It was a tangible reminder of the difference they made. Another client sends cards created by the children in their programs. 

7. Coupons to your social enterprise

If your organization runs a thrift store, food truck, or online shop, consider offering donors a discount coupon as a thank-you. It’s a way to both show appreciation and deepen engagement with your mission.

8. A video message

Create a video featuring your team, volunteers, or program recipients expressing gratitude. Share it through email, text, or even a QR code in your print materials.

9. Social media shout-outs

Post public thank-you messages on your social media channels. Highlight specific donors or volunteers (with their permission) to make them feel special and appreciated. But also to emphasize socially the importance of every individual in your mission.

10. A phone call

Sometimes, a simple phone call to say “thank you” can be incredibly impactful. It’s personal, direct, and unexpected in an increasingly digital world.

11. Ringless voicemail

Send a pre-recorded thank-you message directly to donors’ voicemails. It’s a thoughtful way to connect without interrupting their day.

12. Sticky notes

Attach handwritten “thank you” sticky notes to outgoing mail, such as welcome packets or newsletters. This small, personal touch can make a big difference.

Why it matters

Donors want to feel valued and connected to the causes they support. By moving beyond traditional thank-you methods and embracing creative, personal expressions of gratitude, you can build stronger relationships and inspire continued generosity. Showing appreciation is about finding authentic, meaningful ways to say, “You matter, and your contributions make a difference.”
